Painted Ponte - Manequim Oct 2013 #393

Sometimes you see a pattern and you just have to make it. This pattern from the October 2013 Manequim magazine pattern was one of them. The pieced bodice was interesting, and I adored their sample dress with the leather piping along the seams. I wish I could replicate that dress exactly.

When I decided to make the dress I knew I would have to make some changes. One major change was using a Ponte knit fabric instead of a woven. The pattern came in size 38 only, I topically make a size 42, and sans drafting skills I didn't know how to grade the pattern so took the easy route and make it up in a stretchy fabric.

The only thing I forgot when switching to a knit was that could have cut the back pieces on the fold. But with the front bodice piecing, extra seam lines don't detract from the design of the dress.

The second change I decided on was opting for an A-line skirt instead of the figure hugging option in the magazine. I knew if I made that exact dress I would never wear it as everybody would ask me when my due date was (....I'm not pregnant). I like to avoid setting myself up for those types of scenarios folks! I used the skirt from the Belladone dress which is my new favourite!

The bodice has a one piece facing which I lengthened to below my bust line as there is little I hate more than seeing the line of facing showing through across the top of my bust. simple modification and adds extra "hold" for the ladies. I like the snug feel when wearing Ponte knits but also the comfort that the Ponte isn't showing every lump and bump. That ain't pretty folks!

I actually sewed this bodice up around Christmas time. Christmas in canada is freezing, so go figure I'd try sewing a sleeveless bodiced dress right? I make great decisions. But once I'd pieced the bodice together I put it in my unfinished project basket and it got lost in the vortex. I only refound it while moving my sewing space all downstairs. I fell instantly back in love with the painted Ponte fabric and the pieces bodice and decided to finish it. 1 hour later it was done.

Isn't it funny how you gain and lose motivation? This bodice sat alone for 6 months unloved and one whimsical day I pick it up and finish it all in an hour?? Funny how things work. But it's all good because now that we're finally seeing some summer here It's all suns out guns out!

And finally let's talk about this stunning fabric shall we? I found it at fabricland, it most certainly is a polyester Ponte Roma fabric, but it has the most lovely painted flowers on it. Not just appear to be painted on, actually painted on. If you pick really really hard the paint can come off! it's such a cool fabric! I'm glad I buy fabric in 3m chunks as I now have some extra I might use for shoulders or sleeves of tshirt a. It's so lovely I want to use every scrap! I find of wish is purchased more as it's comfortable to wear.

Review: Manequim Magazine November 2013

This issue isn't my favourite Mannequim, but it does have some really nice patterns. I will officially admit that Manequim is my favourite pattern magazine now. They provide such cute patterns - patterns exactly like the clothes I'd want to buy in store! Many other magazines have the same standard patterns, but this magazine goes above and provides interesting patterns that are fashion forward. I LOVE that. Would I personally wear every pattern? Nope. But that doesn't mean I don't fully appreciate the pattern creativity!

This issue has a few great staples in it and a couple stunning jumpsuits. If I wear tall and lean, I would SO wear jumpsuits! But since my proportions are exactly the opposite to that, I will continue to admire all the tall people who wear jumpsuits and look stunning! I might just make the top half to the first pattern #451 because the back detailing is just too spectacular.

Pattern Size Distribution

Size 36 = 3 | Size 38 = 7 | Size 40 = 11 | Size 42 = 13 | Size 44 = 10
Size 46 = 2 | Size 48 = 2 | Size 50 = 1 | Size 52 = 1

Favourite Pattern: #485
The shaping of the bodice is beautiful and I would love to colour block the centre piece with a patterned fabric constrasting a solid one! Some chiffon as the ruffles! Oh so many ideas in my mind!

So what do you think? Do you like any of the patterns in this issue?

Review: Manequim October 2013

This magazine is a really great find. I ordered them off Ebay, and received three of them for $30 after shipping. This is a Portuguese pattern magazine from Brazil. Inside it provides 27 patterns that are only in 1 or maybe 2 sizes, so you either need how to re-size a pattern (I don't) or be willing to use stretch fabrics and have only half the patterns of value you to.

This October 2013 is the Party edition with a strong focus on floor-length gowns and party-wear. I don't mind this as they are SO beautiful to look at.

Manequim's patterns are fashion forward, stunning, and very well drafted. The only problem being that the magazine is in Portuguese, so you need an intermediate sewing skill or a translator for everything. So lets take a took at the offerings shall we?

The magazine has make-up tutorials, clothing accessories, and is organized more as a general beauty magazine than a straight sewing pattern magazine. There are many photos of dresses included that are NOT patterns provided. They are there for decoration. I don't REALLY like this set up as I want to see the patterns that are provided made up in different materials and such (more similar to Burda's set up). But I won't complain because the patterns are really spectacular.

Here are all 27 of the Party patterns technical drawings included in this magazine:
Since I lived in Argentina I learned to speak Spanish, and was introduced to Portuguese frequently, so I don't find it TOO hard to read the instructions, although technical sewing terms in another language are NEVER fun. But Since numbers are provided I didn't have to think to hard.

Tam. = Size
Folha = Sheet
Pecas = Pieces
Riscado com = Colour of Pattern Line (also identified by the large pattern #'s colour)

Pattern Size Distribution

Pattern sizing ranges from 38 (bust=86cm/hips=92cm) to 46 (bust=102cm/hips=108cm) with:

Size 38 = 7 | Size 40 = 9 | Size 42 = 13 |
Size 44 = 5 | Size 46 = 3

My favourite patterns by far are: 223, 227, 218, 210, 205! All dresses, all stunning, all special occasion! But that's ok - I figure if I make them in a more casual fabric and shorten the skirt length, they can be everyday appropriate right? Well, that is what I'M going with cause I LOVE these patterns.

My Favourite Pattern is: #210

Backless and beautiful, with coverage under the draped bodice. Practical? Not really. But that isn't what I look for in a party gown.

What do you think of this magazine? Would you buy it?
